
Heavy rains and cyclones have claimed the lives of 38 individuals in India and Bangladesh, with 12 fatalities attributed to a mine collapse following the severe cyclone in Mizoram, India.
Deputy Commissioner Nazhak Kumar of Aizawl district reported the recovery of 12 bodies, with efforts underway to locate more victims. Director General of Police Anil Shukla stated that relief operations at the mine have been halted due to inclement weather. Relief funds have been pledged for the affected families, with President Draupadi Murmu expressing solidarity and prayers for the successful recovery of the injured.
In Mizoram, landslides have disrupted transportation networks, leading to the closure of schools and the implementation of remote work for government employees in anticipation of further heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Biswa Sarma confirmed one fatality due to heavy rains, along with power outages and landslides affecting the region.
In neighboring Bangladesh, cyclone-triggered landslides have resulted in additional casualties, bringing the total death toll to 38 across both countries. West Bengal, India, reported eight civilian deaths, raising the Indian toll to 21. Bangladesh’s Disaster Management and Police authorities reported 17 fatalities due to the cyclone and associated rainfall.
