Polling for the by-elections of 6 Senate seats is currently underway in Islamabad, Sindh, and Balochistan, with the voting process scheduled to continue until 4 pm.
The elections encompass one seat in Islamabad, two seats in Sindh, and three seats in Balochistan. The voting body comprises 311 members of the National Assembly who have taken their oaths. Zafar Iqbal has been designated as the returning officer for the National Assembly.
The by-elections are necessitated by the resignation of six senators: Yousuf Raza Geelani, Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haidari, Nisar Khoro, Jam Mehtab, Prince Ahmad Umar, and Sarfraz Bagti.
Voting is underway in the National Assembly, Sindh Assembly, and Balochistan Assembly. In the National Assembly, the main contest is between Ilyas Mehrban of the Sunni Ittehad Council and Yousuf Raza Gilani of the People’s Party. In Sindh, PPP’s Jam Saifullah Dharijo and Muhammad Aslam Abro are contesting against Sunni Ittehad Council’s Nazirullah and Shazia Sohail. Meanwhile, nine candidates are vying for three seats in Balochistan. Among them, the People’s Party has nominated Abdul Qudous Bizenjo, Tariq Hussain Bugti, and Shakeel Durrani. PML-N has put forward Mir Dostin Domki, JUI has nominated Abdul Shakur Ghabizai, and Balochistan Awami Party has fielded Mubeen Khalji and Kahida Babar. Additionally, independent candidates Hirbyar Domki and Syed Mehmood Shah are also in the race.
