LAHORE: Senior Pakistan Muslim League-N leader Rana Sanaullah announced that Nawaz Sharif is actively engaged in party affairs and that the election of the party president will be conducted with full transparency. He expressed hopes that the founder of PTI would avoid a fate similar to that of Mujibur Rahman.
During a press conference in Lahore, Sanaullah stated that following Shehbaz Sharif’s resignation as PML-N President, the Central Working Committee (CWC) convened in accordance with the party’s constitution. The CWC accepted Shehbaz Sharif’s resignation and appointed him as acting president.
Sanaullah further detailed that the CWC established an Election Commission, which released the election schedule, noting that nomination papers were to be submitted by 5 pm today. He confirmed that 11 nomination papers had been issued, with candidates including Basheer Memon, Irfan Siddiqui, Anush Rehman, Raja Farooq Haider, and Shah Ghulam Qadir.
He explained that if only one candidate stands, the president will be elected unopposed; otherwise, a show of hands will determine the winner. Sanaullah praised Nawaz Sharif for transforming PML-N into a public and popular party and emphasized that if there is a consensus within the party regarding the chairmanship, it should go uncontested. He welcomed any party member to submit nomination papers.
Sanaullah reassured that Nawaz Sharif is not displeased with anyone and remains fully active. He noted that Nawaz Sharif’s public statements will resume shortly, highlighting that major decisions within the federal and Punjab governments are made with his approval.
The adviser to the Prime Minister mentioned potential changes in various party positions if needed, reflecting ongoing discussions and suggestions. Commenting on the founder of Tehreek-e-Insaaf, he remarked on the unpredictability of their actions and hoped they would be spared a fate like Mujibur Rehman’s, warning of the potential harm to the nation.
Sanaullah acknowledged Shehbaz Sharif’s critical role in the party after Nawaz Sharif, stressing his current focus on resolving the country’s economic crisis as paramount. He criticized political retaliation against party leaders, noting that genuine democratic behavior could have prompted significant changes in both the country and the party. He affirmed PML-N’s commitment to parliamentary democracy.
In response to a query, he made a remark about the rise of unexpected revolutionaries in the country.
