During a National Assembly session, the ruling alliance faced confusion over bills for the establishment of universities. Efforts by the Deputy Speaker, Zahid Akram Durrani, to resolve the dispute between the PP and (N) League were unsuccessful.
Several bills, including the Official Secrets Act Amendment Bill and the Tosha Khana Bill, were passed during the session. Dr. Ramesh Kumar presented the Authority for Promotion and Protection of Gandhara Civilization Bill 2023, along with bills for 13 new universities. However, disagreements arose, and the legislative process on university bills was postponed due to objections from the Federal Minister of Education.
The Official Secrets Act Amendment Bill 2023 was presented and approved in the National Assembly. Similarly, the Tosha Khana Regulation and Management Bill 2023 and the Pakistan Airports Authority Bill 2023 were also approved. However, the Babrak Institute for Science, Art, and Technology Bill 2023 faced opposition from Federal Minister Rana Tanveer, leading to its referral to a relevant committee.
Tensions escalated within the ruling coalition over university bills, with Education Minister Rana Tanveer supporting one bill and opposing another. The dispute could not be resolved, and even negotiations in the speaker’s chamber failed to find a resolution. Consequently, the session was adjourned until the next day.
