Former captain Rashid Latif has expressed optimism about Pakistan’s chances of victory in the upcoming Asia Cup. In an interview with Pakistan cricket’s prominent website, cricketpakistan.com.pk, Latif suggested that the tournament might feature three matches between Pakistan and India. He emphasized Pakistan’s strong fast bowling lineup and highlighted certain issues within the Indian team that Pakistan could capitalize on for success.
Latif praised Babar Azam’s contributions to Pakistan cricket, noting his transformation as a player after taking on the captaincy. He also discussed the benefits of players participating in cricket leagues and suggested that Pakistan should adopt a balanced approach to granting No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for such leagues, citing the example of West Indies.
Responding to a question about increasing the compensation for the Central Contracts, Latif expressed the view that the recent raise, though seemingly positive from a surface level, might not be sufficient. He pointed out the complexities arising from players being tied to specific leagues due to contractual obligations.
Latif proposed a collaborative effort involving finance and sports management experts to devise a formula that safeguards players’ interests while fulfilling the PCB’s requirements. He also advocated for the inclusion of Sarfaraz Ahmed, an experienced player, in the squad instead of Mohammad Haris.
In a message to the team, Babar Azam urged them to give their utmost performance on the field. Latif concluded by underscoring the need for strategic decision-making to ensure the players’ welfare and the PCB’s objectives are harmonized.
