The election for the Chairman of PCB is anticipated to take place within a week. The former Patron and Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, put forward Zaka Ashraf’s nomination to the PCB Governing Board. However, the Chairman’s election faced legal challenges, leading to a delay.
Recently, the Ministry of Inter-Provincial Coordinating Affairs sent a proposal to the Prime Minister’s Office, questioning the political nature of Zaka Ashraf’s appointment. Meanwhile, a disclosed document revealed Zaka Ashraf’s resignation from the Central Executive Committee and core membership of the Pakistan People’s Party on June 19.
During the recent Lahore High Court session, Zaka Ashraf’s legal representative contested the proposal on behalf of the federal ministry. The lawyer stated that the election timetable will be presented in court in the upcoming week. The election itself is also expected to take place within the same week, as confirmed by the Election Commissioner’s announced date.
In the midst of the dispute, both current and former members of the Board of Governors sought court intervention. This resulted in the federal government establishing a new management committee, with the Prime Minister’s endorsement following cabinet approval.
Justice (retd) Tasadeq Hussain Jilani has been designated as the overseer for the election process. However, the PCB Secretary has penned a letter to oust Zaka Ashraf. The intention is to install their own Chairman for the Management Committee, a role that was assigned by the Federation and holds no connection to general elections in the country.
The caretaker government lacks the authority to overturn decisions made by the elected government. As such, the court is being urged to invalidate the letter composed by the Secretary IPC. A response from involved parties, including the federal government, is expected by August 28.
