Lahore: Siraj-ul-Haq, the leader of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, has declared his intention to take legal action by approaching the Supreme Court concerning contracts with independent power producers (private power plants).
During a press conference held in Lahore, Siraj-ul-Haq expressed that on the previous Saturday, citizens engaged in peaceful protests to voice their refusal to acknowledge the agreements with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). They voiced concerns over the high cost of electricity despite Pakistan’s abundant water resources, where the government is considering charging 90 rupees per unit of electricity.
He emphasized that they plan to petition the Supreme Court against the agreements made with these independent power producers, asserting that these agreements are draining the pockets of the people. He also criticized these agreements for pushing Pakistan into an energy crisis, hindering the country’s development and preventing the construction of dams.
Siraj-ul-Haq lamented that the caretaker prime minister dismissed issues such as inflation and escalating electricity bills as insignificant, despite the fact that many people struggle to meet their monthly expenses while facing rising petrol prices. He noted that these bills continue to accumulate and increase.
Furthermore, he conveyed a message to the Prime Minister, asserting that if the government is procuring expensive electricity, the blame should rest with the government, and it should not burden the people. He argued that the government has lost control, and the nation’s economy is facing a series of setbacks. He also mentioned the presence of powerful cartels in the petrol and diesel industry in Pakistan.
