Today, within Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), intra-party elections are slated to take place in Lahore. Barrister Gauhar has formally submitted his nomination papers for the position of PTI Chairman.
The Election Commission has mandated these intra-party elections. However, concerns have been raised by founding members about the integrity of the current setup’s arrangements. They have urged the inclusion of Election Commission observers to ensure transparency.
One of PTI’s founding members, Akbar S. Babar, visited the PTI Central Secretariat to gather information on the election procedures, voter lists, and nomination papers. Babar expressed disappointment, highlighting that a party advocating for democracy is hesitating to trust its own members.
In Babar’s words, the Election Commission should assign officers to oversee and monitor the entire election process. He questioned the legitimacy of an election where voters are absent, accusing PTI of misleading the Election Commission.
During Babar’s visit to the PTI central office, he was received by PTI Balochistan leaders, but the absence of central leadership prompted his departure from the office.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Peshawar has written to PTI’s Chief Election Commissioner, seeking details about the polling schedule, locations, polling staff, and the number of vehicles to ensure appropriate security measures for a peaceful voting process.
Despite the queries, concerns have been raised over the Chief Election Commissioner’s lack of response even after 24 hours.
