The US response to inquiries regarding the investigation into alleged election rigging in Pakistan, negotiations with the IMF, and the shutdown of social media platforms has been revealed.
According to reports from the World News Agency, during the weekly press briefing, Matthew Miller, spokesperson for the US Department of State, addressed questions raised by journalists. One journalist highlighted a letter signed by 30 members of the US Assembly urging an investigation into President Joe Biden and his administration’s stance on the alleged election rigging in Pakistan, questioning whether this indicated a shift in US policy. Miller emphasized that while the elections in Pakistan were fiercely contested, resulting in the formation of a new government, there are concerns about irregularities that need to be addressed through thorough investigation.
Regarding negotiations with the IMF, another journalist queried whether the US was involved in discussions concerning Pakistan’s $3 billion bailout program. Miller refrained from providing a direct response, indicating a need for further updates before commenting.
On the issue of freedom of expression and the proposed ban on social media platforms in Pakistan, Miller reiterated the US’s stance in support of freedom of expression globally. He condemned any restrictions on social media and emphasized the importance of upholding freedom of expression, denouncing past government shutdowns of internet platforms in Pakistan.
