adverse weather conditions have started to impact the preparations for upcoming matches in Colombo, specifically at the R Prema Dasa Stadium, which has been soaked by heavy rainfall.
The remainder of the Asia Cup matches, including the highly anticipated India-Pakistan Super 4 round match, are now rescheduled to take place at the KR Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Organizers are optimistic that the ground will be ready in time for the matches.
Due to heavy rains the previous day, the venue was already wet, and it is slated to host Sri Lanka vs. Bangladesh on Saturday, followed by Pakistan vs. India the following day. Godfrey Debrera, the Chief Curator of the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), acknowledged that there is a rain forecast, and the morning downpour has left the pitch and surrounding area saturated. The outfield has absorbed a substantial amount of water, but efforts are being made to prepare it for the matches.
It’s worth noting that there were discussions about potentially relocating the competition to another venue due to the inclement weather, but this proposal did not gain approval from the Indian cricket board.
Godfrey mentioned that rain is affecting all cities in Colombo, including Palelly and Hambantota. To ensure the pitches are ready, approximately 100 staff members have been deployed across the three venues. While preparations are primarily focused on Colombo, backup venues are also being readied in case they are needed.
He further added that the rain prior to the matches is manageable, but it becomes a more significant concern if it occurs during the matches. Nevertheless, having access to earlier weather forecasts from the meteorological department would greatly assist in their preparations.
