The ICC World Cup’s second semi-final match between South Africa and Australia at Kolkata’s Eden Gardens was interrupted by rain. At the end of play, South Africa had scored 44 runs for the loss of 4 wickets in 14 overs. The International Cricket Council (ICC) has a reserve day scheduled for this match.
The reserve day rule comes into play under certain conditions. Initially, umpires aim to complete the match on the scheduled day, even by reducing it to a minimum of 20 overs per side. If this isn’t feasible, the reserve day is utilized.
There are two scenarios for the reserve day based on when the rain halted the game:
Scenario 1: If rain affects play before or during the 19th over of a 50-overs-per-side match, the game is reduced to 46 overs per side. If rain interrupts again later, the match is continued on the reserve day, allowing both teams to play a full 50 overs per side.
Scenario 2: If rain disrupts play before or during the 19th over of a 50-overs-per-side match, the game is curtailed to 46 overs. Should rain return after a brief resumption, the match continues on the reserve day with each side playing for 46 overs.
Keep in mind, the final match of the tournament is slated for Sunday, November 19, at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
