Colombo: There is a growing demand for an inquiry into Sri Lanka’s most devastating loss to India in the Asia Cup final.
During the Asia Cup final, the Sri Lankan hosts suffered a crushing defeat, losing by 10 wickets after managing only 50 runs. This outcome took everyone by surprise in such a major sporting event.
During a press conference, a journalist posed a question to Tesa Ata Naike, a member of the opposition in Sri Lanka’s parliament. The journalist asked whether the host team’s defeat in such a manner could be attributed to a political motive, suggesting that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was not presented with a birthday gift.
In response, Naike expressed that everyone had anticipated a fierce competition from the host team in the final, but the actual match concluded swiftly, leaving spectators baffled. He refrained from delving too deeply into the painful defeat, as it could negatively impact the players’ morale. Instead, he called for an investigation to determine whether any political interference had played a role in this catastrophic loss.
Naike noted that the Public Accounts Committee had recently summoned officials from the Sports Ministry to investigate financial irregularities. He questioned whether it was plausible for the Sports Ministry to also investigate the shocking defeat to India in the Asia Cup final.
