The Chief Election Commissioner of Islamabad has stated that during proceedings related to the Sunni Ittehad Council’s specific seats, the PTI lawyer argued in the Supreme Court that losing their electoral symbol would jeopardize their chances of obtaining reserved seats.
PTI lawyer Ali Zafar raised objections during the Election Commission’s hearing, pointing out that notices were issued selectively to parliamentary parties. However, the Chief Election Commissioner clarified that only entitled parties received notices.
Ali Zafar highlighted that while the Election Commission had kept PTI’s petitions pending, they feared losing specific seats due to the withdrawal of their electoral symbol. The Commission’s officials assured that seat allocation wouldn’t be affected, but PTI’s concerns were validated.
Barrister Ali Zafar further argued that the Sunni Ittehad Council failed to provide a list of specific seats, emphasizing that political parties participating in elections must be recognized. When questioned about the council’s electoral participation, he pointed out their presence on the Election Commission’s list.
A member suggested the council’s registration cancellation, to which Ali Zafar agreed, stressing adherence to due process. He reiterated that the Sunni Ittehad Council, recognized as a political party with an allotted electoral symbol, should undergo proper procedures for dissolution.
