In Islamabad, Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa expressed his dismay at receiving special treatment under the law, stating that it is unacceptable.
During a session of the Supreme Court, a 3-member bench discussed a case regarding banned weapons and requested the presence of the Attorney General for the upcoming hearing.
Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa highlighted that his name had been flagged for possessing a prohibited arms license without proper authorization. Despite his efforts to address the issue through correspondence, no response was received. He emphasized the importance of upholding the law without exceptions and suggested the possibility of appointing a judicial assistant to address the matter.
Furthermore, Chief Justice Isa underscored the seriousness of possessing weapons, noting that firearms like Kalashnikovs are not trivial items. He criticized the lack of security measures in place, particularly outside schools attended by underprivileged children, contrasting this with the presence of armed guards at other institutions. He expressed concern about the difficulty in distinguishing between lawful gun owners and potential terrorists.
Chief Justice Isa also criticized the prevalence of gun culture, citing social media videos showing celebrities brandishing firearms and gun shows. He emphasized the need to prioritize the safety and future of children, urging action from the government to address these issues.
During the session, Justice Musarat Hilali questioned whether members of parliament were allowed to openly display weapons during sessions, while Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar mentioned the common sight of weapons at wedding ceremonies. These discussions highlighted the pervasive nature of the issue and the need for comprehensive measures to address it.
