In Islamabad, Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa emphasized the pivotal role played by the judiciary in safeguarding the electoral process during a recent full court reference commemorating the retirement of Justice Sardar Tariq Masood.
He highlighted a critical moment where the Lahore High Court’s decision could have jeopardized the elections, but thanks to swift judicial action, a potential crisis was averted.
Chief Justice Isa recounted how despite efforts to convene a bench of three senior judges to hear the case, Justice Ijaz-ul-Ahsan declined participation. However, despite the late hour, the senior judges convened and delivered their verdict at midnight, preventing any potential interference in the election schedule by the President of Pakistan and the Election Commission.
He praised Justice Sardar Tariq Masood’s legal acumen and regretted the loss to the provincial judiciary by not appointing him as Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court, noting that his presence enriched the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Isa also addressed concerns over judicial vacancies, indicating ongoing discussions about amending appointment rules and proposing the establishment of a separate secretariat within the Judicial Commission for judge appointments.
Regarding Justice Sardar Tariq Masood’s contributions, Chief Justice Isa highlighted his commitment to expediting case hearings, particularly in the context of military court appeals, and his significant role in enhancing procedural practices through the Practice Procedure Committee.
