In Islamabad, the Supreme Court has granted conditional permission for military courts to deliver reserved verdicts. This decision came during a hearing on intra-court appeals concerning judgments against military courts.
During the proceedings, Attorney General Mansoor Usman disclosed that approximately 20 individuals could potentially be released before Eid. Those acquitted or with reduced sentences will receive concessions, particularly those with sentences of one year or less, totaling around 105 accused individuals. Release procedures for those in army custody will involve three stages: the pronouncement of the reserved verdict, its confirmation, and approval by the army chief.
However, Justice Aminuddin Khan emphasized that while permission for military courts to deliver reserved judgments was granted, it remains subject to the final decision on appeals.
Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi requested a list of individuals slated for release, but the Attorney General stated that he couldn’t provide names until verdicts were issued by the military courts.
The Supreme Court allowed the KP government’s request to withdraw appeals related to the nullification of civilian trials. Furthermore, the court sought information on individuals sentenced to less than three years.
Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar suggested aiming for their release a few days before Eid, to which the Attorney General agreed.
The court adjourned the hearing until the fourth week of April and instructed the Attorney General to submit an implementation report.
