Constitutional amendment allowing one candidate to contest election from only 2 constituencies approved

National Assembly: Legal Aid and Justice Authority Amendment Bill approved

The Standing Committee on Law and Justice of the National Assembly approved the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2023, after which any candidate will be able to participate in the election on two constituencies simultaneously, while more than that will be prohibited.

The Standing Committee on Law and Justice of the National Assembly passed the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2023. 

Under the Constitutional Amendment Bill, Article 223 of the Constitution was proposed to be amended, any candidate will be eligible to contest elections for maximum two seats in the National and Provincial Assembly simultaneously. 

It will be prohibited for any candidate to contest elections in more than two constituencies. The meeting of the Standing Committee on Law and Justice of the National Assembly was chaired by Chairman Chaudhry Mahmood Bashir Vark. 

In which a detailed review of the constitutional amendment bill presented by Jamaat-e-Islami member of assembly Maulana Abdul Akbar Chitrali regarding the amendment of Article 223 of the Constitution was conducted. Fighting wastes national resources. 

He said that in the constitution of Pakistan, it is allowed to submit nomination papers for elections in more than one constituency, but one seat can be kept after winning. Keeping it in itself is strange, which is not only a burden on the national exchequer, but is tantamount to exploitation of the candidates and the people.

According to the Constitutional Amendment Bill, the Election Commission spends up to 270 million per constituency. 70 lakhs for printing papers, 30 lakhs for transportation and 1.30 lakhs for election staff payments. 

The Standing Committee approved the constitutional amendment according to which any candidate will be eligible to contest election on maximum two seats at the same time while any candidate will be prohibited from contesting election in more than two constituencies. From one seat within 30 days if elected
