In a recent development, the Sindh High Court has taken action in response to a petition filed by renowned actresses Mehwish Hayat and Kabra Khan. The court has summoned the Deputy Director of Cybercrime and directed the investigation officer to appear before the court with a comprehensive report. The petition pertains to a misleading campaign propagated on social media platforms.
During the court proceedings, the investigating officer informed that measures have been taken to block all links targeting Mehwish Hayat and Kabra Khan on social media. However, there has been no response from the Twitter administration thus far. Expressing dissatisfaction over the delay in concluding the investigation, the court has called upon the Deputy Director of FIA Cybercrime to be present at the next hearing. Additionally, the investigating officer has been instructed to furnish a progress report.
The court has adjourned the hearing of the petitions until September 7. In the petition submitted by Mehwish Hayat and Kabra Khan, it is argued that a YouTuber named Adil Farooq Raja tarnished the reputation of four prominent actresses within the entertainment industry by disseminating false allegations against them.
The actresses’ integrity and respect were gravely affected by these baseless and concocted accusations. Subsequently, the YouTuber Adil Farooq Raja issued a subsequent video retracting and clarifying his earlier statements. Nevertheless, the reputation of various actresses, including the petitioners, has suffered irreparable harm.
Furthermore, the petition highlights that attempts were made to address this defamatory content by involving both FIA and PTA; however, no action has been taken against the offensive material present on YouTube.
