In a significant decision by Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, it has been determined that the luxury cars designated for the Chief Justice will be placed for auction.
As per the communication sent by the Supreme Court Registrar to the Cabinet Secretary and Chief Secretary Punjab, the Mercedes-Benz purchased in 2020, valued at 61 million, will be among the vehicles auctioned. Additionally, the bullet-proof Land Cruiser provided by the Punjab government will also be included in the auction list.
The letter emphasizes the inappropriateness of importing lavish vehicles for constitutional posts, particularly when they have not been utilized by the designated official. Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa hasn’t made use of either vehicle. Consequently, the funds generated from these auctions will be directed towards improving public transport systems.
The Registrar’s letter further highlights that the Chief Justice became aware of the procurement of a new Mercedes-Benz, valued at 6.1 million, in September 2020. Simultaneously, a brand-new bullet-proof Toyota Land Cruiser was provided by the Punjab Government for the Chief Justice, both of which are currently parked at the Supreme Court Rest House in GOR Lahore.
According to regulations, two vehicles are allotted to the Chief Justice and each judge. However, Justice Qazi Faiz Isa has abstained from using either the Mercedes or the bullet-proof vehicle. The acquisition of expensive imported vehicles for constitutional and public officials imposes an unwarranted financial burden on the national treasury. Therefore, the funds accrued from the sale of both vehicles will be allocated towards enhancing public transportation systems.
