Continuous internet usage is having detrimental effects on mental health, leading to confusion and various disorders. The younger generation, in particular, is staying up late on social media, causing sleep disruptions and mental health issues. The addictive nature of social media is a growing concern among youths, necessitating a national public awareness campaign to highlight its potential dangers.
During a conference organized by the Sindh Mental Health Authority, medical experts, including Chief Secretary Dr. Sohail Rajput, Chairman Dr. Karim Ahmed Khawaja, and Secretary Dr. Syed Zafar Mehdi, discussed the adverse impacts of internet and social media on mental health. They pointed out that these negative effects are affecting children significantly.
Chief Secretary Sindh, Dr. Sohail Rajput, acknowledged the efforts of Dr. Karim Ahmed Khawaja and emphasized the importance of ensuring the safe use of social media. Dr. Zafar Mehdi of the Sindh Mental Health Authority shared recommendations to address the adverse effects of internet and social media on mental health.
The pervasive addiction to social media among the youth is causing concern, as they are constantly connected to it through their mobile phones, often unbeknownst to their parents. This addiction is leading to negative consequences in society, with young children drifting away from healthy activities and core values, traditions, and family customs. Social media platforms such as Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter are particularly popular among the youth, but their excessive usage is reducing positive engagement and impacting mental health.
The Sindh Mental Health Authority aims to release guidelines on promoting a positive role in mental health concerning social media usage in the near future. Addressing this issue requires collective efforts to ensure a healthier relationship with the internet and social media platforms.
