KARACHI: For the first time in Pakistan’s history, onion exports have reached a record high. According to Waheed Ahmed, head of the Pakistan Fruit and Vegetable Exporters Association, onion exports from July to April 2024 exceeded $210 million. Previously, only kino exports had reached this figure. By the end of this year, onion exports are expected to hit $250 million.
Waheed Ahmed attributed this growth to the ban on Indian onion exports, which allowed Pakistan to enter new markets. Pakistani onions are now being exported to major global markets, including the Far East and the Middle East. He emphasized the need for the government to take measures to extend the shelf life of onions, as this could help Pakistan develop new markets for its onions in the future.
