Former IG Sindh and PML-N senator Rana Maqbool Ahmed has sadly passed away.

In Lahore, Pakistan, Senator Rana Maqbool Ahmed of the Pakistan Muslim League-N and former IG Sindh has passed away. He had been unwell for a period and was receiving treatment at a local private hospital for two days.

His demise occurred on Tuesday morning at a private hospital in Lahore. Sources indicate that Rana Maqbool Ahmed’s funeral prayer is scheduled to take place either tomorrow or the day after, upon his son’s return from overseas.

Rana Maqbool Ahmed held prominent positions as the former Chief of Sindh Police (IG) and also served as the Prosecutor General of Punjab. In 2018, he was elected as a senator with the support of the Muslim League-N, subsequently becoming the chairman of the Senate Cabinet Committee. During his tenure in the Pakistan Senate, Rana Maqbool Ahmed played a significant role in proposing amendments to criminal laws.

Notably, Rana Maqbool Ahmed faced allegations of mistreatment and injury to Asif Ali Zardari, including accusations of biting his tongue. Asif Ali Zardari filed a case against Rana Maqbool Ahmed, which was later dismissed by the court. Rana Maqbool Ahmed gained notoriety for his alleged involvement in torturing political opponents and fabricating false cases during Nawaz Sharif’s second term in office. He was also a co-accused with Nawaz Sharif in the 1999 Pervez Musharraf plane conspiracy case.

Chairman of the Senate, Sadiq Sanjrani, conveyed his condolences to Rana Maqbool’s son via telephone.

The President of the Pakistan Muslim League-N and former Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, expressed his condolences on Rana Maqbool Ahmed’s passing, highlighting his significant contributions and noting that his services would be remembered for years to come. Maryam Aurangzeb, Senior Vice President and Chief Organizer of the PML-N, also extended her sympathy and condolences to Rana Maqbool Ahmed’s family.
