In a recent development, Senator Mushtaq Ahmed Khan has criticized the Election Commission’s decision on the elections, deeming it unconstitutional. He argued that if the Election Commission is unable to effectively carry out elections, it should be disbanded.
During a discussion at the Islamabad High Court, Senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan expressed his view that the Election Commission’s decision, which cited the ongoing census as a reason for postponing elections, lacks legal validity. He also attributed the delay to the previous coalition government’s involvement.
The Senator asserted that the failure to hold elections within the timeframe specified by the Council of Common Interests goes against the constitution. He warned that such delays could lead to a derailment of the democratic process, potentially endangering media freedom and infringing upon fundamental human rights.
It’s worth noting that the Election Commission recently announced that it would not be feasible to hold general elections within the next 90 days. Instead, the commission plans to complete the delineation of constituencies based on the new census data within a period of four months.
This decision was made following a meeting of the Election Commission, which was presided over by Chief Election Commissioner Sultan Sikandar Raja. The commission’s focus is now on finalizing constituency boundaries over the coming four months.
