According to the UN Staff Union, Pakistan was the target of targeted killings last year. The United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO) came in second place with 13 fatalities, followed by the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) with four fatalities, and the United Nations I Organization Stabilization Mission with one fatality for the ninth year in a row (UNIFIL). 28 members of the military and 4 members of the police, including a female police officer, were among the 32 people who died, according to an official statement. According to Staff Union President Aitor Arauz, "Peacekeepers and the civilian workers who operate side by side with them are on the front lines of the United Nations' operations in the world's most difficult circumstances." Each intentional assault on UN employees undermines peacekeeping, one of the foundational foundations of the multilateral building, according to Arauz. The establishment of suitable procedures to guarantee accountability for these atrocious acts, which may qualify as war crimes under international law, is the obligation of the whole international community. 32 UN and affiliated workers were killed in 2022, according to the UN Staff Union, bringing the total number of casualties from intentional assaults including improvised explosive devices, rocket-propelled grenades, artillery fire, mortar rounds, landmines, armed and dangerous criminals to 494. According to the report, there were 1 peacekeeper each from Guinea, Ireland, Jordan, Morocco, Nepal, Russia, and Serbia in addition to 7 from Pakistan, 7 from Egypt, 4 from Chad, 3 from Bangladesh, 2 from India, and 2 from Nigeria who perished in 2022. Six Pakistani peacekeepers working for MONUSCO, Muhammad Ismail, Faizan Ali, Asif Ali Awan, Samiullah Khan, Muhammad Saad Nomani, and Muhammad Jamil Khan, perished in a helicopter accident in the Democratic Republic of the Congo's east (DRC). The MONUSCO helicopter that went down in North Kivu's Tshanzu district, 20 kilometres south of Rutshuru, was on a surveillance and reconnaissance mission in a region where the M23 militia and the DRC military forces had recently engaged in combat. According to the press statement, suspected members of the Twirwaneho armed group attacked the MONUSCO mission's operating headquarters in Minembwe, South Kivu, and killed another Pakistani peacekeeper, Babar Siddique. One of the biggest nations providing uniformed men to UN peacekeeping missions has been Pakistan. Pakistan has sent nearly 200,000 soldiers on 43 operations since the 1960s. Pakistan lost 157 of its bravest men in the ultimate sacrifice they made for the cause of peace.
