Niamey: The army has overthrown the government in the African country of Niger. According to foreign media, the president of Niger, Mohamed Bazum, has been detained by his own bodyguards.
Supporters of the ousted president, on the other hand, are condemning the military coup and are protesting outside the National Assembly in the capital, Niamey, for his release.
Official sources in Niger say that President Mohamed Bazoum and his family are safe. US Secretary of State Anthony Blanken has condemned the military coup in Niger and announced his support for the elected government.
