California-based social media platform Instagram, which is owned by Meta, is introducing a new tool to enhance the security of its direct messaging service. The latest feature aims to prevent users from receiving unwanted photos and videos in their Direct Messages.
With this update, Instagram users will no longer receive photos, videos, or audio recordings in their direct messages from individuals they don’t follow. The messaging function will be limited to text messages only. Additionally, the company will implement a text message limit, allowing only one message to be sent initially, and the conversation can progress further only after the other user accepts the chat request.
Cindy Southworth, who oversees women’s safety at Meta, emphasized the company’s commitment to ensuring customers feel confident and secure when using Instagram’s messaging system. By testing and implementing new features, Meta aims to prevent users from receiving unwanted content until they explicitly accept the chat request.
Meta is appreciative of the feedback received from the Instagram community and remains open to further suggestions to improve user safety and comfort on the platform.
