Judicial Commission’s decision to conduct forensic tests of audio leaks and make the proceedings public

The Judicial Inquiry Commission set up on Audio Leaks has announced to conduct forensic tests of all audios and make the proceedings public, starting an investigation into the leaked audios. 

The first meeting of the AudioLeaks Judicial Commission was held under the chairmanship of the head of the commission and senior judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Qazi Faiz Isa. The Judicial Commission has requested the transcripts of all the audios from the Attorney General of Pakistan, the names, addresses and contact numbers of all the persons included in the audios have also been requested. 

The Commission directed the Attorney General to submit all the records before May 24. During the meeting, the Attorney General read out the TORs and powers of the notification of the Commission, the Judicial Commission established its secretariat in the Supreme Court. 

A mobile phone and SIM were also requested from the Attorney General for commission proceedings. Justice Qazi Faiz Isa said that being the senior most judge of the Supreme Court, I also have some constitutional duties, I am also a member of the Supreme Judicial Council. None of the accused appeared before the judicial commission. 

He said that we have a heavy burden and all those who appear will be respected, and want the commission to complete its proceedings soon. 

Attorney General Usman Mansoor Awan appeared in the commission. Justice Qazi Faiz Isa asked under which law the commission was formed? On this, the Attorney General said that this commission was constituted under the Commission of Inquiry Act, 2016. 

The head of the commission directed the attorney general to provide the mobile phone and SIM for the commission today and said that the phone number provided for the judicial commission will be made public. 

Meanwhile, Justice Qazi Faiz Isa announced to make public the proceedings of the Audio Leaks Judicial Commission during the meeting. Faiz Isa also clarified the jurisdiction of the inquiry commission and said that the inquiry commission is not the Supreme Judicial Council, the commission will conduct all its proceedings in the Islamabad Supreme Court, if any witness or party in-camera. If action is requested, appropriate order will be given, it is possible to go to Lahore only to take the statements of some elderly women. 

He said that those who appear before us will not be considered accused, the name of the secretary of the judicial commission will be finalized today, the process should be completed as per the mandate, the inquiry commission will not make any case against any judge. Whether it is taking action or not, the commission is set up only to determine the facts. 

He said that the jurisdiction of the Supreme Judicial Council will not be interfered with, all witnesses will not only be respected but also expected to be respected in return, the commission has the power to issue summons to those who do not cooperate, the commission only Notices will be issued and efforts will be made not to issue summons to anyone, government officials already have no room for refusal. 

The head of the commission said that an advertisement will be issued in Urdu and English newspapers to provide information to the public Advertisements will be released. The Judicial Commission also directed the Attorney General to identify the relevant agency to verify the audios and said that the Punjab Forensic Agency can be contacted to verify the audio leaks, if a person says that the voice in the audio is not his.

or tampered with should be verified beforehand, a member of the forensic agency should be present at the commission proceedings so that if a person refuses, prompt verification is done. Later, the Judicial Commission adjourned further proceedings till May 27.
