Lahore High Court: Pervez Elahi’s appeal rejected, wife allowed to contest election.

Pervez Elahi

The Lahore High Court has dismissed the appeal challenging the rejection of nomination papers filed by former Punjab Chief Minister Pervez Elahi. However, the court has granted permission for Elahi’s wife, Qaisara Elahi, to participate in the upcoming election.

In a session presided over by Justice Ali Baqer Najafi, the full bench of the Lahore High Court reviewed the election writ petitions. The hearing addressed the petition contesting the rejection of nomination papers filed by Pervez Elahi, his wife Qaisara Elahi, son Monis Elahi, and others.

Pervez Elahi’s lawyer, Shahzad Shaukat, argued that the nomination papers were accused of concealing information, specifically regarding the omission of seven arms licenses and the absence of a designated account. Shaukat contended that, according to the law, attempts to invalidate the nomination should be based on concrete evidence. He emphasized Pervez Elahi’s extensive political experience and urged the court to allow him to participate in the election.

Advocate Pervez Elahi mentioned that their confirmer and recommender, Amjad Pervez, had been arrested while attempting to submit the nomination papers. In response, Justice Ali Baqir Najafi questioned whether any complaint had been filed with the Election Commission, stating that it was the Commission’s responsibility to issue timely orders. Pervaiz Elahi’s lawyer clarified that they approached the court, and after court orders, they were permitted to submit the nomination papers to the Returning Officer’s office.

Following the conclusion of the hearing, a three-member bench led by Justice Ali Baqer Najafi reserved the verdict, which was later announced. The court dismissed Pervez Elahi’s appeal but approved the appeal of his wife, Qaisara Elahi, allowing her to contest in the election.
