A request concerning the disqualification of former PTI Chairman Imran Khan has been forwarded to a larger bench by Justice Shujaat Ali Khan of the Lahore High Court.
This petition challenges Imran Khan’s five-year disqualification by the Election Commission on August 8, 2023. The petition contends that the Commission hastily disqualified him ahead of an election date set by the Supreme Court and that the allegations against him are unfounded.
Imran Khan seeks nullification of the Election Commission’s disqualification and a suspension of the disqualification notification until the petition reaches a final decision.
In a separate hearing, Justice Shujaat Ali Khan considered a petition regarding PTI’s directive to redo intra-party elections. Barrister Ali Zafar represented the petitioner, arguing that the intra-party elections held on June 10, 2022, were in accordance with the law and the constitution. The Election Commission’s subsequent order to redo these elections within 20 days was deemed illegal and unconstitutional by the petitioner. The Lahore High Court previously invalidated the Commission’s directive to redo the elections and affirmed the validity of the elections conducted on June 10, 2022.
