In Islamabad, the MQM has opted to take seats among the government ranks in the National Assembly, solidifying an agreement with the Muslim League-N, formally signed after a pivotal meeting between the leadership of both parties.
The agreement, consisting of three main points, addresses issues concerning the local government system and Karachi’s challenges. Notably, it prioritizes constitutional amendments aligned with the Charter. The primary focus includes devolving administrative and financial powers to grassroots levels, embedding the NFC award into the constitution to bolster district and town finances, and establishing a legislative framework for local governments to be refreshed every four years post-elections.
Per the agreement, the MQM pledges support for the election of Prime Minister and Speaker, aligning with the Muslim League-N. Following the signing, representatives from both parties addressed the media. Ahsan Iqbal emphasized the commitment to empowering the populace and resolving their concerns locally, while Mustafa Kamal hailed the agreement as unprecedented in political history, framing it as a transformative solution for Pakistan’s economic and administrative challenges. Dr. Farooq Sattar echoed sentiments of accountability, highlighting the importance of fulfilling commitments at the local level to alleviate burdens on higher governmental tiers. He stressed that if implemented, this agreement could alleviate the need for further pledges from federal or provincial authorities, as responsibilities would be appropriately delegated to local leaders.
