The Gilgit-Baltistan provincial administration and Awami Action Committee initiated a shutter down strike due to the discontinuation of subsidies on wheat following unsuccessful negotiations.
As a result, major markets in Gilgit remained closed as per the Public Action Committee’s call, halting business operations. However, traffic continued uninterrupted.
The Awami Action Committee has vowed to persist with protests until the subsidy is reinstated. They plan to escalate their demonstrations, progressing from a shutterdown strike to a wheel jam strike and large-scale protests against the cessation of the wheat subsidy.
Members of the Awami Action Committee assert that unless the Gilgit-Baltistan government reverses the decision to end the wheat subsidy, they will intensify their protests, potentially leading to a complete shutdown of the region.
