A study has found that men who are sexually active at a young age are more likely to die from prostate cancer.
Being overweight between the ages of 17 and 29 increases the risk of developing and dying from prostate cancer, according to research presented at the European Congress on Obesity. Obesity causes an increase in the amount of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in the body. This hormone plays a role in cell growth and scientists believe that it causes disease. Experts say that since people can’t change factors like age and family history, weight is one thing men can control to reduce their chances of developing the disease. In the research, the scientists tried to find out the relationship between the different variables of this disease with the mutation.
Researchers from 1963 to 2019 258,477 men from Sweden between the ages of 17 and 60 were weighed at least three times. During this time, 23,343 participants were diagnosed with prostate cancer and 4,790 men died from the disease. The study revealed that weight gain was highest in the early part of life. Between the ages of 17 and 29, weight increased by an average of 0.72 kg, between the ages of 30 and 44 by 1.34 kg and between the ages of 45 and 60 by 0.22 kg. Those who gained 0.49 kilograms per year had a 10 and 29 percent higher risk of developing aggressive prostate cancer and dying from the disease, respectively, than those who maintained their weight.
