Lahore: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has deemed the recent decision by the Council of Common Interests as unconstitutional and has announced its intention to challenge it in the Supreme Court.
The party claims that there is a clear violation of the Constitution in this matter. According to the Constitution, if the National Assembly is dissolved prematurely, the Election Commission is obligated to conduct elections within ninety days. The PTI alleges that the decision aims to unduly prolong the upcoming elections, contrary to the Election Commission’s intentions, while also disregarding the Constitution and the Supreme Court’s directive to hold elections in Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The PTI spokesperson stated that the decision of the Council of Common Interests does not provide sufficient justification to evade elections, except for the Prime Minister. Notably, the elected provincial chief ministers are also part of this council representing common interests. However, during the meeting, the inclusion of unelected caretaker chief ministers from Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the decision-making process was seen as irregular.
The PTI is prepared to counter any attempts that may hinder people’s right to vote as per the constitutional provisions. The party perceives these actions as potential schemes to prevent fair elections and is determined to resist them, particularly in light of the possibility of a significant electoral setback.
