Lahore: A move to combat smog in Punjab includes the establishment of an Environmental Protection Authority. Senior Provincial Minister Maryam Aurangzeb announced the decision, emphasizing the government’s commitment to environmental improvement. The authority will ensure strict enforcement of environmental regulations. A cabinet committee, chaired by Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz, will oversee smog-related issues. Additionally, a smog monitoring sectoral cell has been established within the Planning and Development department, comprising representatives from various sectors.
Aurangzeb highlighted ongoing efforts to develop a legal framework aligned with the Chief Minister’s vision for environmental enhancement. Emergency action plans have been drafted, targeting specific sectors to enforce regulations effectively. A specialized environmental protection force will be established. Digital data collection will identify smog contributors, leading to crackdowns on emission sources and toxic substances.
Stringent measures will be implemented, including mandating zigzag technology for kilns, requiring fitness certificates for vehicles, and banning those with high emissions or faulty engines. A monitoring and certification system for vehicles with defective engines is in the works. Industries will be obligated to install emission control systems to mitigate toxic fumes.
