Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Leader of the Opposition Raja Riaz are set to resume discussions today to decide on the Caretaker Prime Minister’s nomination.
As per reports by Express News, PM Shehbaz Sharif reached out to Opposition Leader Raja Riaz, extending an invitation for consultations. Both leaders have presented three potential candidates each for consideration.
The Pakistan People’s Party has proposed the names of former Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani and former Chief Justice of Pakistan Tasadeq Hussain Jilani as potential Caretaker Prime Ministers. Additional nominees include Sadiq Sanjrani, Hafeez Sheikh, Mian Muhammad Soomro, and Fawad Hasan Fawad.
In the event that a decision isn’t reached within three days following the assembly’s dissolution, the matter will be referred to the parliamentary committee. Discussions regarding the appointment of a Caretaker Prime Minister to oversee interim governance are ongoing.
Opposition leader Raja Riaz has expressed optimism, stating that there is no impasse regarding the selection of the Caretaker Prime Minister. Every effort will be made to finalize this appointment.
Regarding potential candidates, former Foreign Secretary Jalil Abbas Jilani has emerged as a strong contender for the position. Speculation is rife that his nomination is likely to gain approval.
Sources indicate that Jalil Abbas Jilani, the former Foreign Secretary, is expected to visit the Prime Minister’s House. His candidacy has gained considerable traction for the role of Caretaker Prime Minister.
In a statement from the Prime Minister’s House following the meeting, it was stated that the Leader of the Opposition was invited by the Prime Minister in accordance with the Constitution to discuss the crucial matter of appointing a Caretaker Prime Minister. It was agreed upon that further consultations on this national issue would take place on August 11, tomorrow.
After the meeting, Raja Riaz addressed the media, emphasizing the amicable atmosphere of the discussion with the Prime Minister. He shared that the initial consultation focused on potential nominees for the Caretaker Prime Minister position. He conveyed that both leaders presented their respective names during the hour-long meeting and indicated that the upcoming meeting would continue the deliberations.
Raja Riaz emphasized that there are several names under consideration, stressing that the chosen individual for the Caretaker Prime Minister role must be a capable leader. A total of six names have been proposed, with the Prime Minister awaiting Raja Riaz’s nominations.
