Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif, President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, has been elected as the 24th Prime Minister of Pakistan in the National Assembly session. Speaker Ayaz Sadiq announced that Shahbaz Sharif secured the support of 201 members during the voting for the Speaker of the House.
The National Assembly session began with chants and slogans, creating a tumultuous atmosphere reminiscent of a marketplace, as members from Sunni Etihad Council and PML-N exchanged heated words, denouncing “thieves” and questioning the legitimacy of mandates.
During the election for Leader of the House, JUI-F boycotted the process and walked out, while Akhtar Mengal abstained from voting. Shahbaz Sharif emerged as the victor with 201 votes, defeating Umar Ayub, the candidate of Sunni Ittehad Council, who received 92 votes.
Following the announcement, Shahbaz Sharif, Nawaz Sharif, and Asif Ali Zardari embraced each other in a display of unity. Shahbaz Sharif garnered support from Muslim League-N, People’s Party, MQM, Balochistan Awami Party, and Stability Pakistan Party, while Umar Ayub received backing from Balochistan National Party, representing the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf-aligned Sunni Etihad Council.
