In Karachi, Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon has criticized K-Electric, labeling it as a rogue entity flouting constitutional norms.
He emphasized the need to scrutinize the company’s financial statements to gauge its profits, suggesting that K-Electric has consistently operated without restraint. Memon highlighted that K-Electric, mandated to allocate a portion of its earnings for network expansion and maintenance, has failed to fulfill this obligation.
Pointing out recurrent issues with K-Electric’s infrastructure, Memon noted frequent feeder tripping regardless of weather conditions. The Sindh Assembly recently passed a resolution urging electricity providers to rectify their shortcomings. Memon emphasized that imposing collective punishment, as witnessed through estimated billing practices and disconnections in rural areas, violates constitutional principles.
Moreover, Memon criticized the reluctance of electricity providers to adjust bills, opting instead for installment plans, exacerbating concerns, particularly during a heatwave. He condemned the reported withholding of electricity from examination centers, further underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Following the assembly’s resolution, K-Electric highlighted outstanding dues to the government, prompting Memon to assert that such actions by power suppliers disproportionately impact the populace, indicative of corporate avarice and ineptitude. Memon warned that if constitutional breaches persist, legal action will ensue, underscoring the imperative for accountability and adherence to the rule of law.
