In Islamabad, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has pledged to drop charges against journalists following a Supreme Court hearing on cases of journalist harassment.
Chief Justice of Pakistan noted the gravity of the situation in 2021 when journalists faced harassment and abuse. The court emphasized the lack of opportunity for accused journalists to defend themselves and acknowledged the misuse of Section 20 of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA).
The Supreme Court announced that FIA has committed to withdrawing cases against Amir Mir and Imran Shafqat, with FIA officials stating that applications for withdrawal will be submitted. Further proceedings in the case have been adjourned until March 27.
