In Islamabad, the Supreme Court has overturned the Election Commission’s decision to suspend Speaker Abdul Khaliq Achakzai of the Balochistan Assembly, restoring him to his position.
Additionally, the Court nullified the Election Commission’s directive for re-polling at 12 polling stations in PB 51 Chaman.
The matter has been referred back to the Election Commission, with the Court urging them to consider input from all candidates and reach a decision within 10 days. The Court, led by Justice Aminuddin Khan, questioned the legal basis for the Election Commission’s re-polling order and highlighted the need for consistency in their assessment of polling stations. The Director-General of the Election Commission clarified that re-polling was only suggested for polling stations with notably high voter turnout. This ruling comes after the Election Commission had initially revoked the Speaker’s success notification and ordered re-polling following a request from opposition candidate Asghar Khan Achakzai. The decision was challenged by Abdul Khaq Achakzai of the Muslim League-N in the Supreme Court.
