The ICC is considering hosting the 2024 Twenty20 World Cup between Pakistan and India in New York, despite not finalizing the venue for this highly anticipated clash with just 10 months left until the event. Broadcasters are facing uncertainty in this regard.
The ICC’s plan is to hold the Twenty20 World Cup in a country where first-class cricket isn’t a regular fixture. They are aiming for 17 of the matches to take place in the United States, with New York being considered for the Pakistan-India match, mainly due to its sizable Asian immigrant population. However, the availability of suitable facilities in New York could pose challenges.
Efforts have led the ICC to explore the possibility of constructing a temporary 34,000-seat stadium in Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, but there have been reported opposition and complications from various quarters in the Bronx.
Despite field inspections, no final decisions have been made regarding the venue. Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has voiced skepticism about the feasibility of building a stadium in New York.
The ICC has not provided official comments on the matter but indicated that the venues for the 2024 Twenty20 World Cup in the West Indies and the United States are expected to be announced in the coming month, offering some hope based on recent leagues held in the US.
