Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani dropped the Prevention of Violent Extremism Bill 2023 due to strong opposition from both government and opposition members. The bill, introduced by Minister of State for Law Shahadat Awan, aimed to prevent violent extremism in the country.
However, during the Senate session, opposition members protested and voiced concerns about the bill’s potential impact on democratic principles and its alleged bias against certain political parties.
While the bill faced significant resistance from ruling coalition parties, including JUIF and the National Party, as well as the Jamaat-e-Islami, it was ultimately dropped. Senator Mushtaq Ahmed argued that the bill targeted all political parties and threatened democracy.
During the session, other bills, including the Tushahkhana Regulation and Management Bill 2023 and Pakistan Airports Authority Bill 2023, were passed by the Senate. Additionally, the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority Bill 2023, Pakistan Rawit Hilal Bill, and Pakistan Air Safety Investigation Bill were introduced and referred to relevant committees.
The Prevention of Violent Extremism Bill 2023 aimed to criminalize acts of violent extremism, including providing financial support to extremist individuals or organizations, inciting violence, and spreading information promoting violent extremism. It also included measures such as asset freezing, travel restrictions, and de-radicalization training for individuals involved in violent extremism.
The bill faced opposition on various grounds, including concerns about its potential misuse and infringement on civil liberties. Proponents argued that it was necessary to combat rising extremism and protect national security.
Despite the bill’s withdrawal, discussions around addressing violent extremism and safeguarding democracy continue to be essential topics in the country’s legislative agenda.
