The Election Commission has deferred its ruling on the ANP’s internal election matter.
A commission of 5 members led by the Chief Election Commissioner heard the case concerning the Awami National Party’s intra-party elections. ANP President Asfandyar Wali was present, and Masood Sherani from the DG Political Finance Wing briefed the commission on the issue.
The legal counsel stated that they were advised to conduct elections within 6 months. Failing this, they were to hold elections anew. The Chief Election Commissioner expressed concern about the delay in intra-party elections, warning that without these, the party might not receive an election symbol or be eligible to participate in future elections.
The Election Commission officials mentioned that the Awami National Party requested a delay in conducting intra-party elections. The party’s tenure would complete on May 1, 2024, marking five years. The ANP’s lawyer highlighted a constitutional provision for 4-year terms but stated confusion over the election timeline within 6 months.
The Chief Election Commissioner emphasized the necessity of these elections, dismissing the connection between the party’s internal elections and the general elections. Asfandyar Wali requested a 6-month extension, which the Chief Election Commissioner acknowledged but didn’t confirm. Subsequently, the Election Commission postponed its decision regarding the ANP’s intra-party elections.
