The National Assembly has also approved the Pakistan Army Amendment Bill 2023 after its passage in the Senate. Law Minister Nazir Tarar presented the bill for approval, aiming to address the disclosure of unauthorized information obtained in an official capacity concerning Pakistan’s security and interests.
According to the bill, individuals who disclose such unauthorized information may face rigorous imprisonment for up to five years. However, those who disclose information with the permission of the Army Chief or an authorized officer will be exempt from punishment.
Furthermore, any disclosure of information against the interests of the Pakistan Army will be subject to the provisions of the Official Secrets Act and the Army Act. The draft bill also prohibits individuals under this law from engaging in political activities, except for officers in general positions who may participate in such activities upon retirement or resignation.
In addition, officers posted on sensitive duties will be restricted from engaging in political activities for five years following retirement. Violation of these restrictions may result in severe punishment of up to two years of imprisonment under the Army Act.
