In Islamabad, a division has emerged within the PDM (Pakistan Democratic Movement) parties regarding the sugar crisis and the escalating prices in the nation.
Ahsan Iqbal, the former Federal Minister for Planning, pointed out that the decision to export sugar was made by Naveed Qamar, the Commerce Ministry official, and suggested directing inquiries about the crisis towards him. He emphasized that the PML-N (Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz) cannot be held responsible for every decision made by the coalition government within the PDM.
In contrast, Naveed Qamar, a former commerce minister and a member of the PPP (Pakistan Peoples Party), countered this argument by stating that attributing the responsibility for sugar exports solely to one ministry is not accurate. He clarified that the decision had been endorsed by the Economic Coordination Committee and approved by the Cabinet. Moreover, he highlighted that the sugar stockpile exceeded the allowable quantity for export.
It is worth noting that the sugar crisis has caused sugar prices in the country to surpass 200 rupees per kilogram, prompting the government to authorize sugar imports as a measure to address the crisis.
