The US has stressed the importance of direct talks between Pakistan and India to address shared challenges. Matthew Miller, the spokesperson for the US Department of State, expressed full support for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s offer of negotiations with India during a weekly press briefing.
Miller asserted that the US is actively encouraging both nuclear-armed countries to engage in dialogue on matters that have been causing problems for each other.
Furthermore, the spokesperson clarified that the United States does not favor any specific political leader or party in Pakistan, emphasizing their support for free, fair, and transparent elections in the country.
Regarding the ethnic riots in Manipur, India, Miller urged citizens to maintain peace and refrain from participating in the riots to prevent further escalation.
It’s worth noting that two days prior to the press briefing in Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended an offer to India for talks, emphasizing the need for meaningful discussions to resolve serious issues and move beyond the status of ordinary neighboring countries.
