Islamabad: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has indicated that the decision regarding the appointment of a caretaker prime minister is anticipated to be reached today.
During a conversation with journalists in Islamabad, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif highlighted that, as per the constitutional provisions, there exists an eight-day timeframe for selecting a caretaker prime minister. However, it is likely that the announcement of the caretaker prime minister’s identity will occur today.
The prime minister went on to express his intention to engage with allied parties in deliberations over the appointment of the caretaker prime minister. Additionally, he mentioned a scheduled meeting with the leader of the opposition, Raja Riaz, for finalizing this decision. He emphasized adherence to the established constitutional procedure pertaining to the appointment of a caretaker prime minister.
Shahbaz Sharif elaborated that if a consensus cannot be reached on a particular candidate, the matter will be referred to the parliamentary committee. This committee will be required to reach a decision within a span of three days, as stipulated by the constitution. Should an agreement still elude the parliamentary committee, the matter will then be forwarded to the Election Commission. The Election Commission will be entrusted with arriving at a conclusive decision within a timeframe of two days.
Responding to an inquiry regarding his tenure in government, the Prime Minister acknowledged that the 16-month period during which he served as Prime Minister marked the most challenging phase in his political career spanning 38 years. He underscored his collaborative efforts with all coalition partners in surmounting the encountered challenges.
