The spokesperson for the United States State Department has affirmed the country’s commitment to supporting the democratic process in Pakistan.
Vedant Patel, the deputy spokesperson of the US Department of State, highlighted the significance of fostering democracy and an independent media in Pakistan during a recent weekly press briefing. In response to inquiries, Patel emphasized that the future leadership of Pakistan hinges on the choices made by its people, and the United States advocates for a transparent and free democratic process.
Addressing concerns about media restrictions, the US spokesperson asserted that a free and independent media is crucial in healthy democracies as it ensures voters are well-informed about their right to vote and enables the government to be held accountable. Patel expressed apprehension over reports indicating limitations on freedom of expression, association, and press in Pakistan, stating that such restrictions are inconsistent with the current government’s purported goal of conducting fair and transparent elections.
