In his farewell address to Parliament, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed his thoughts on the recent developments. He highlighted that his government’s term of 16 months was marked by numerous challenges inherited from the previous administration’s failures. He noted the complexities faced both domestically and internationally.
Shahbaz Sharif criticized the previous government for mishandling relationships with international organizations like the IMF, straining ties with friendly nations, and indulging in false narratives that harmed relationships, particularly with China. He accused the Imran Niazi government of jeopardizing the nation’s interests for political gains.
He emphasized that during his government’s tenure, political opponents were not mistreated or subjected to undue pressure. He acknowledged the punishment given to a party leader but mentioned the absence of jubilation over it. He advocated for seeking divine mercy rather than harboring resentment.
Referring to a troubling incident on May 9, Shahbaz Sharif lamented the desecration of memorials for martyrs and veterans. He deemed this day a perpetual mark of sorrow and urged the house to remember and condemn such acts.
He connected an increase in terrorism to the past government’s welcoming stance toward certain groups. He recalled instances where terrorists exploited this leniency, leading to disturbances and attacks across the country. He underlined the importance of peace brought about by the sacrifices of martyrs and expressed concern about the resurgence of terrorism.
Shahbaz Sharif announced his intention to send a proposal for the assembly’s dissolution to the President. He urged the house to address the conspiracy that occurred on May 9 and pass a resolution condemning any actions against the country and its armed forces. He stressed that such audacious behaviors should be unequivocally rejected.
