The current power structure within universities can create a breeding ground for exploitation and abuse, leaving young students vulnerable and unprotected. When a single person is granted unchecked power over staff, faculty, and students, coupled with a loosely phrased security policy enabling surveillance, it opens the door to various forms of exploitation.
This imbalance of power has led to cases of blackmail, harassment, sexual exploitation, drug use, and human trafficking within campuses like Balochistan University and Islamia University Bahawalpur. When such incidents come to light, the typical response from the all-powerful vice-chancellors (VCs) is denial and deflection, blaming others and resorting to counter-accusations.
In these situations, students are often left voiceless and without representation. They lack any meaningful vote or influence in university matters, which exacerbates their vulnerability. Investigative committees formed to address such issues rarely include student representation and often fail to provide adequate accountability.
Moreover, the close-knit community of VCs may protect one another, making it challenging to address long-running scandals effectively. Students are often left as the victims in this power struggle, with little recourse for justice.
To address this issue, there must be a systemic change. Students need a voice and representation in university decision-making processes. Currently, student concerns are often brushed aside in favor of maintaining the status quo.
Efforts to establish external accountability mechanisms, allowing students to report grievances without fear of retribution, are essential. It’s crucial to create a culture where students’ well-being and safety are prioritized over the interests of a select few in positions of power.
While the road to change may be challenging, it’s imperative for the education system to uphold the principles of democracy, fairness, and justice. By promoting transparency and empowering students, universities can foster a safe and nurturing environment for young minds to flourish. Only through collective efforts can we ensure a brighter and more secure future for the next generation.
