Since 2016, Meta users have utilized the Messenger Android app as an SMS platform. However, this function is now slated to be gradually discontinued, starting next month.
As per reports from global media outlets, individuals who currently employ Messenger for their SMS or MMS communication were informed about this change through an article released by Meta. Following this transition, users of Google or Samsung devices will be compelled to utilize the designated messaging application.
The article outlined that subsequent to the Messenger app update scheduled for September 28, 2023, the capability to employ Messenger for sending and receiving messages will be rescinded. In its place, Meta will forward messages to users’ default messaging app on their phones. Users retain the flexibility to adjust the messaging app setting within their phone’s configurations.
It’s worth noting that Facebook Messenger initially introduced the SMS feature in 2012, but it was temporarily suspended in 2013. The feature was subsequently reinstated in 2016, marked by the utilization of purple and blue themes.
